Highway Markers Project

The League of Women Voters organized a project to recognize the contribution of women who have made a significant impact in our community. The book “ROADSIDEHISTORY: A Guide toKentucky Highway Markers”was published, listing the over 2,000 Kentucky Historical Highway Markers currently standing in Kentucky. Unfortunately, only 63 markers honor Kentucky women and another 59 mention a woman indirectly. To increase this number we have developed the following plan: (1) Encourage women’s organizations, businesses and other entities to honor women who are no longer living (i.e., the founder or first president of your organization) by funding a highway marker. (2) Sponsor a workshop to explain the state’s process of erecting Highway Markers. (3)Provide technical support to groups interested in erecting markers. The League of Women Voters is funding a highway marker honoring the role of Louisville women in the women’s suffrage campaign. We hope you will join us in this endeavor by supporting a marker honoring a significant woman within your organization. By erecting historical highway markers, we will educate the public to be inspired by the invaluable contributions of local women and in doing so encourage women today to work to improve our community. If you would like more information about this initiative, call Marsha Weinstein at 502-228-1988.

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders

Who should worry about noise? Everyone. No matter how old or young you are, too much exposure to loud noise can permanently damage your ears. Whether it’s the screech of a chain saw, the sudden blast of a hunting rifle, or the roar of a lawn mower, exposure to loud sounds can cause Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. In fact, it is the most common work-related disease. Already, 10 million Americans have permanently damaged their hearing. Girl Scouts of the USA is a member of a national coalition of over 70 organizations led by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communications Disorders in collaboration with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
