Straw Weaving

Materials Needed:

  • 3 to 5 drinking straws (number of straws determine width of belt)
  • 3 to 5 strings of yarn – twice your waist size (same number as number of straws; you may also choose to make a bracelet or head band, etc.)
  • Tape

Directions:

  1. Thread yarn through each straw.
  2. Tape the end of each string of yarn to each straw so it won’t pull down and out (see Figure A)
  3. On the first straw, tie yarn to straw (see Figure B)
  4. Weave the yarn over and under the straws (see Figure C). As the weaving fills the straw, push weaving down on the strings – only as much at a time as you need space on your straws.
  5. Never push weaving completely off straw until finished with weaving (see Figure D)
  6. When your belt, etc., is finished, measure it around your waist and push weaving in place where you want it. Leave enough length of your strings of yarn at each end to use as fasteners. Make overhand knot on both ends (see Figure E
