Festival of the Arts Patch 2008Festival of the Arts - November 8, 2008

For the 36th year, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is presenting its largest program event, a day-long experience of the arts for Girl Scout Daisies through Ambassadors. Get your Festival of the Arts catalog from your service unit manager or online so you can look at all the wonderful performances, interesting tours, and hands-on workshops being offered at this year’s arts festival. There are many art forms for girls to experience and enjoy. Bring your troop together to look over all the offerings, choose the favorites, and complete and mail the reservation request to the Louisville office.

IMPORTANT NOTES

* Make sure all girls are registered by the time your Festival reservation request gets to the Louisville office. The first draw deadline for scheduling is September 25 at 5:00 pm. Your reservation request will not be processed if your membership registration for the 2008-2009 year has not been paid by the same date.

* Reservation requests that are received after September 25 will be processed after those received by the first drawing deadline date.

* Camp Shantituck is open on Friday and Saturday nights for troops traveling from outlying service centers. Camp reservations are on a first-come basis. Your request must be attached to your Festival registration and received by September 25. Call your local service center to request a Festival camping information flyer for further information.

* Cost for Festival is $11.00 per person, which includes a patch and admission to programs. Cookie Dough may be used as payment, and Scouterships are available if girls need assistance. To apply for a Scoutership, obtain a Scoutership Request Form from your service center.

* Absolutely no tagalongs will be allowed. This generally refers to any girl under age 5 not registered with GSUSA or any boy.

* October 6: deadline for additions to your troop's first round registration

* October 20: registration closes and no changes can be made.

* October 22: Troop schedule, tickets, and patches will be mailed beginning on this date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where are the Festival programs located?
A:
This year many of the Festival programs will be located in the Kentucky International Convention Center and downtown Louisville. A few are located just across the river in southern Indiana or in outlying areas of the city.

Q: How long are the programs?
A: Programs are scheduled to last approximately 1 to 1¼ hours unless noted otherwise in the "Time(s)" column of the catalog.

Q: How many adults need to attend with the troop?
A: At least 2 adults must register with each troop before we can process your registration. Check Safety-Wise for girl/adult ratios. Please note that some performances restrict the number of adults who can attend due to limited seating.

Q: Can individual Girl Scouts register for Festival?
A: Individually-registered Girl Scouts (Juliettes) are invited to attend if accompanied by two adults (or one adult if that person is the girl's parent).

Q: Can girls not in the troop attend with the troop?
A: Yes, as long as they are registered Girl Scouts and you complete the Additions Form before October 6.

Q: How many programs can our troop register for?
A: Troops can register for up to four programs, but no more than one event and one workshop within those four due to high demand in those areas.

Q: When is payment due?
A: Payment is due when a troop registers. This includes registrations received by the First Draw deadline and all registrations thereafter.

Almost RecessAlmost Recess is Back!

Almost Recess is back again! These four talented people will present a program jam-packed with today’s music. Although they sing a cappela, you’ll find yourself looking for the band and wondering how they are able to create that sound using only their voices. And you will learn to be part of the band, too. If you haven’t seen Almost Recess yet, go this year! CDs will be available for purchase after the show! Look for more information on Almost Recess in your Festival brochure. For a sample of their music, visit www.almostrecess.com.

Festival of the Arts Program Updates!

Please note that some Festival programs are sometimes cancelled and others fill up quickly. We have included updates below. Troops can continue to register for programs with openings through October 20, 2008 under the following circumstances:

  • Troops have to be registered for the troop year 2008-2009.
  • Troops cannot register more girls for Festival than they have registered with their troops.
  • Troops can register for up to four programs. They can include more than one event as availability allows.
  • Some workshops will not be available for late registration after October 20 (we have to close workshops so presenters can purchase supplies, etc.). There may be openings for workshops that do not require supplies.

Additions:

  • Doll Collection at the Jeffersontown Historical Museum has added "making a handkerchief doll" to the tour. They are providing the supplies.
  • Derby Dinner DOES allow sack lunches to be brought in by the attendees.
  • M.O.R. has a new name: Two Til Midnight. We're excited that they will be performing at Festival of the Arts again this year.

Corrections:

  • Page 35 map to Brennan House is incorrect. Brennan House is located between Chestnut and Broadway on 5th Street. The address on page 35 is correct.
  • The descriptions for the "Making a Mini-Scrapbook" workshop on pages 29 & 32 are incorrect. The correct description is "Each girl will create an 8-page mini-scrapbook. The pictures may be brought to the workshop or can be added later at home. It’s best if the pictures revolve around a single subject."
  • Louisville Ballet Moves is at the PLC and NOT at St. Peter’s Church.
  • Express Yourself with Flamenco is at the PLC and NOT at St. Peter’s Church.
  • First Draw deadline has been extended to September 25 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Doug Doolin will be in the morning and Spin Me A Tale will be in the afternoon.
  • Derby Dinner will not end in time for the troops attending to be able to be on time for a 1:15 program. This means the maximum programs which can be attended are 3 if you receive Derby Dinner.

Cancellations

  • Artes de Mexico
  • African Dance

Openings

Registration is now closed and presenters have been notified of their attendance numbers.

Please Note

  • Workshops tickets have a "0" on the adults because only the girls participate. Adults will be admitted.
  • All tickets will be mailed beginning October 22. If you do not receive yours by November 3, please call the Festival of the Arts hotline at 502-636-0900 x34000 or 888-771-5170 toll free.
  • If your registration was in the office for first round (no later than 5pm Sept. 25) and you want to add on girls/adults it is IMPORTANT you first call Barbara Hudgell. Most of first round is scheduled and several programs are full. If you add without calling first, it can bump you out of programs. 240 troops were in first round this year. Remember all additions for first round must be in by Fri. Oct. 3 so the tickets can begin to be typed on Monday. Remember to list lots of choices.

If you have any questions regarding Festival, please contact Barbara Hudgell at the Girl Scout office, 502-636-0900 ext. 34000 or 888-771-5170, or Linda Austin at extension 22800.
